Should you get the Amazon Smart Plug?

The Amazon Smart Plug promises a straightforward setup process and operation. The BestReviews Testing Lab tried it in a home setting to see how it performed.

The BestReviews Testing Lab strives to investigate every claim the brand/manufacturer makes about the product. For this article, the testing team removed the plug from its packaging and set it up. The testing team already had the Alexa app downloaded, so they were able to skip this step. They chose the smart plug from the list of devices in the Alexa app and connected it to their Wi-Fi network. Then, they connected it to a lantern, a TV and a speaker.

The testing team compared it to other smart plugs they’ve tested, including the WeMo Smart Plug. They used it with each of their three devices, noting whether there were any differences between them and how easy they were to control. They set up routines and schedules for each device and remotely turned their lights on and off.

They noted their favorite and least favorite features and whether the average person could easily use these plugs.

The Amazon Smart Plug is an uncomplicated, small and proficient device that incorporates voice control to any power outlet. Designed solely for Alexa, this plug lets you control your lights, appliances and other electronic devices, hands-free. You can activate or deactivate devices, create timers or establish routines using voice commands.

It has a small profile that doesn’t block other outlets, and its simple white design will surely look great in any room.

How to use the Amazon Smart Plug

Our testing team determined that the Amazon Smart Plug is incredibly simple to set up and operate. To get started, insert the device into a socket, launch the Alexa app and follow the on-screen guidance to link your smart plug to your Wi-Fi network. Once connected, you can control the associated devices using voice commands via an Alexa-enabled device, such as an Echo, Fire TV, Fire tablet, Sonos One or even the Alexa app on your mobile phone.

Our testing team suggests downloading and configuring the Alexa app on your device before beginning the setup process. This will make connecting and setting up the Amazon Smart Plug even simpler. Also, the Smart Plug might not work with devices that use separate charging cords, so confirm compatibility before purchasing.

Amazon Smart Plug benefits

Linking the smart plug to your Wi-Fi and Alexa app takes only a few moments. It’s compatible with various devices, including lights, fans, coffee machines and more.  Because it works directly with Alexa, you don’t need a dedicated smart home hub. 

The Amazon Smart Plug's streamlined design ensures it doesn't obstruct the second socket. The testing team said it was easy to configure routines and schedules for their devices through the Alexa app. Additionally, it can supervise your energy consumption, enabling you to see how much energy your devices use throughout the day.

Amazon Smart Plug drawbacks

The Amazon Smart Plug operates solely with Alexa; it can’t be used with other voice assistants like Google Assistant or Siri. The packaging doesn't offer clear warranty details, unlike some competitors. Still, it’s worth noting that Amazon provides a one-year limited warranty.

The plug doesn’t work with some devices that use a separate charging cable. For example, the testing lab tried using it with a Marshall speaker that charges with a separate cable. However, because the cord isn’t required to power the device on and off, it didn’t respond to their voice commands.

The package contains only one plug, whereas competitors like WeMo provide packs with multiple plugs for a comparable price. Some reviewers said it was occasionally slow to connect to Wi-Fi. However, our testing team found that the Amazon Smart Plug connected faster than the WeMo Smart Plug.

Should you buy the Amazon Smart Plug?

The Amazon Smart Plug is an economical method to enhance your home with voice control. It's quick to set up, compact and operates seamlessly with Alexa. Additionally, its understated design blends with any home decor. However, it isn’t the best option for those who prefer Siri or Google Assistant. 

The ideal user for this plug desires added convenience and hands-free control over their home devices and appliances. If you're already invested in the Alexa ecosystem or are seeking an effortless entry into smart home technology, the Amazon Smart Plug is an excellent choice.
